AFOs, KAFOs and SMOs
AFOs (ankle foot orthoses) are typically used for clients who have muscle weakness, joint instability or high muscle tone. These devices encompass the foot, ankle and leg, finishing just below the knee. AFOs may be rigid or articulated, and may include a carbon fibre propulsion component or a leafspring design for clients requiring less stability and more functionality.
KAFOs (knee ankle foot orthoses) extend beyond the knee to below the hip. They provide mechanical stability to the entire leg, which may be required for patients with weakness or paralysis in proximity to the knee.
SMOs (supramalleolar orthoses) are smaller versions of AFOs, stopping above the ankle, rather than extending towards the knee. This allows more freedom of movement for suitable clients.
